Blogaholic

So we had a meeting today on how to maintain a daily log of what we're working on, and we're going to try and use blogger. So I created http://bammnotes.blogspot.com/ for that purpose.

I want to keep this page for us. I still need a wall to tap on...

And hopefully by creating a new page that gets updated daily, I'll be better at maintaining all of them while I'm in the blogger dashboard.

Ok, off to lunch!

We Are Efficient

Our duty is to create efficient efficiencies, correct inefficient efficiencies, banish all laziness and efficient inefficiencies, and shun altogether the inefficient inefficiencies.

The opposite of efficiency is opportunity cost. Venues that regularly host live performances without attempting to capitalize on the content created on stage suffer such a cost. Ours is a content creation factory designed to streamline the process. The best musical equipment will be on hand so that artists need only bring their guitars and picks to a performance. The stage doubles as a recording studio in off hours. The recording studio produces music content that is utilized in video productions, short films, and on an online jukebox for subscribers and on-site visitors.

Such a factory requires a significant capital investment in property, plant and equipment with a heavy reliance on technology. These one-time costs are depreciated over the life of the equipment. There are other fixed costs such as insurance, maintenance and IT expertise. In total, the costs associated with such a factory would be represented on a pro forma statement as an upfront capital outflow of 33% to 50% of the total cost in Y=1, with capital outflows trending downward for each subsequent year. By Y=5, the only costs would be for insurance, maintenance and employee salaries.

But for now, at Y=-1, developing efficient efficiencies is more a theoretical exercise than a practical one. I think we're managing to avoid most inefficient inefficiencies--but then again, how can you really know if you're doing the wrong thing badly? A big task is tackling the efficient inefficiencies. There are a number of business practices, such as video editing and file organization, that were "good enough" to get us by until now. But no more: knowledge is power, and such practices are no longer efficient. In this fledgling state, we are only now becoming aware of the ourselves amid the awkwardness of start-up adolescence. There is, I believe, a metamorphosis to come.

So in the spirit of affirmation (and in spite of the lackluster, raw, vegan HippieMeal I ate last night) I will declare with a note of optimism in my voice:
We are efficient!

These are my tappings on the wall to you

The thing I miss most is being able to talk with you about all of the decisions, ideas, meetings, scoldings, opportunities, obstacles--before presenting them to everyone else. I've been keeping ahead of the curve. Sometimes just barely. But I don't like how I hear the words for the first time as I'm saying them to everyone else. It's an evolution I need to make, and am making, but sometimes just barely.

Hovering on the verge of self-pity, I suddenly remember you've already given me an outlet to do this--to speak to you first--foremost--before all. And I haven't yet taken advantage of it. So here I am, at last, talking to you again, somewhat like before. It feels good. Even better than knowing we eat the same salad 2-3 days a week. I can look at our picture on my desk, though, and feel almost like we're talking. (In my mind, you're even staring at where my beard used to be and smiling in disbelief at the newness of the old me.)

True--I can't get your feedback right away through this crude medium. But sometimes it's in the telling of the idea that the opportunity comes, or the venting about the obstacle that the seed is planted for the next meeting. Other times, our words are like a 401(k). You listen, consider, contemplate, reflect--your mind, a judicious mirror, and I want to keep you in my pocket all day and smile deep into you when no one else is looking.

So here I am: tap tap tap-taptap tap tap-taptap.

That means my sun rises and sets with you, Morning Star.

Proud of my crew

It's not the video, per se, that was successful. It was about the process. We hit the streets, and in two hours we had all of the footage compiled. Fernando got people to talk. Jamie pieced it together. Phil recorded the postscript. I bounced the version of "Boy Who Rhymes" sans lyrics. Plus, we're experimenting with a new HD delivery format that will allow us to embed on our own site. Pretty sweet. Wonder when YouTube will get on the premium service bandwagon.

Meet Joe the Plumber from Bloomsday Rising on Vimeo.

The Stats:
Turnaround time - 6 hours for YouTube (new record!)
Total length - 71 seconds (new record!)
Total views on YouTube after 24 hours - 23
Number of "Joe the Plumber" videos we're competing with - 43,000+
